SLICED
Thesis collection, Parsons School of Design
SLICED is a footwear collection that highlights the unconventional ways an object can be 'cut' (or deconstructed) and then reassembled in a new way. Inspired by glass sculpture artist, Anna Torfs, this shoe collection offers an alternative perspective regarding the sole of the shoe, as well as how layers circle around one another to replicate the idea of an object being 'split.' Ironically, after their deconstruction, the forms are reassembled into a stronger form. Playing with scale, as well as horizontal and vertical shapes, each shoe incorporates a different manner of slicing, creating an unexpected staggered outcome. Negative space is also a key design element, adding to the effect created by cut layers and straps. To complement the active shapes, a pop of color is added to both large and small areas of the shoe, bringing attention to aspects of the shoes - including the insole board, outsole board and toplift - that might otherwise be overlooked.
*All shoes are original designs and constructed by hand
